The fully autonomous driving is realised with CO.DRIVE, where a track guidance system is combined with a speed control system. Thus all vehicle tests can be implemented where exactly reproducible driving is necessary, without having a driver to operate the vehicle or reside in the vehicle. The public effective moose test can be performed repeatedly under exactly the same circumstances.
As the driver's seat remains completely free, a driver can still sit in the car and take control over the vehicle at any time.
CO.DRIVE - principle design

The relevant test car is equipped with the CO.ACT driving robots to operate the steering wheel, pedals and the gearshift lever. These actuators are controlled by an integrated vehicle computer system that calculates all necessary real time algorithms to autonomously drive the vehicle. Vehicle data is measured by a sensor attached on the vehicle front and transferred to the computer system. No more driver is required in the vehicle, contact to the vehicle is held via online radio link. Advanced security mechanisms guarantee that the vehicle in case of a failure comes immediately to a halt. The implemented automatic driving corresponds to a human driver but much higher accuracy and reproducibility. With the following system properties automated driving of vehicles can be used for a variety of applications:

Accuracy

The control of driving dynamics of CO.DRIVE represents an extension of CO.TRACK by including the longitudinal vehicle dynamics. It does not matter whether it is a vehicle with diesel or gasoline engine or whether the vehicle has a conventinal or automatic transmission. CO.DRIVE is able to automatically start up the vehicle and to accelerate, decelerate or to keep a constant speed according to the previously defined driving maneuvers. The under hard real time conditions calculated control algorithms are based on latest research results. The specifically for this application developed software combines highest accuracy, extreme reliability and sufficient robustness for use under daily test conditions. |

Range of Application
Typical application fields of CO.DRIVE are vehicle tests where a human driver either for health reasons or because of its unsufficient accuracy or reproducability no longer can be used. CO.DRIVE is simply adaptable to the existing test conditions and thus reveals a variety of new application areas.
- misuse testing
- brake tests
- autonomous elk tests
- development of future driver assistance systems and vehicle control systems eg, ESP, ACC, cornering assistent, etc.
- endurance tests, bad way testing
- accident reconstruction
- Stunt scenes with moving cars
